Many of the Fisherman's Wharf restaurants are named after the family that has operated the establishment for generations. It is part of the charm of the Wharf, where the heritage of the Italian fishermen continues to this day. Cioppino's continues that tradition. Almost. We are fourth generation native San Franciscans who take great pride in both our city and our restaurant. The only difference between us and many of the other family-run restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf is that our family name is not Cioppino. We would have used our family name, but we were forced to admit it simply does not look good in lights. So we settled on Cioppino's, which is what we do best. Cioppino is a lusty and flavorful seafood soup which is uniquely San Franciscan. The origin of both the dish and the name came from the Italian fishermen in the early 1900's, when Fisherman's Wharf was still called Meigg's Wharf. Someone would make the rounds of the moored fishing boats, calling out for for contributions to a common, festive stew. One fisherman would toss a nice, fat fish into the bucket, another would drop in a succulent Dungeness crab, another some herbs and vegetables. The cry that prompted each contribution was :Chip In!, Chip In!". But coming from an Italian throat, this American slang had to end in a vowel. And the "in" was, of course "een". So "Chip-een-o" was born. It's been 100 years, but the Italian fishermen are still here, and so is Cioppino, which is our signature dish. Our Cioppino is so good we named our restaurant after it.

I will (and have already) gladly recommend(ed) this restaurant to my friends. We came on a Friday night when they had every table full and yet our waiter was gracious, warm and helpful throughout the evening. My girlfriend and I had not seen each other in over a year so, for my friend, my husband and myself it was a treat to linger over dinner and just have a chance to talk, laugh and be together. The wait staff cleaned up the other parts of the restaurant allowing us time to finish and once again go into the night. My thanks for giving us a lovely memory. GooglePlace - January 2018

The food and service was above average, but the price was a little high for what it was. Everything in the area is a little overpriced though. I was starving by the time we got here and I was 110% full by the end so you can expect a good sized meal here which I really appreciated. I recommend the fisherman's platter, it's a mild dish but still more exciting than fish and chips. GooglePlace - January 2018

Great Atmosphere and Great Food! Every year my family makes the trek to San Francisco and Cioppino's is a must stop for us! The day after Christmas our tribe of 9 made the trek once again. As you can imagine, we ordered vastly different items from the menu but everyone said their meal was delicious. As you can see from my pictures, we ordered Steak, pizza, chicken fingers for the little ones, cheese tortellini, mac n cheese and a platter of fried everything! The food was delicious and the service was great even though the place was packed with Happy Hour goers! We enjoyed ourselves and the place filled up immediately after we sat down around 5:20pm. By the time we left at 6:30pm, there was a hungry-people line out the door waiting to be seated. PROs: Great food and great atmosphere; Happy Hour selection is some of the best on Fisherman's Wharf; great wine list, hearty portions, family friendly, bar seating, water view seating, can accommodate large and small/intimate group sizes, outdoor/indoor dining and friendly servers. CONs:'s Fisherman's Wharf... What more can I say... $$Pricey but not outrageous... No reservations are available here so get there early and get on the list. But most of all, enjoy the food and atmosphere at Cioppino's! GooglePlace - December 2017

This was a nice surprise. We had spicy pizza and spaghetti clam dish. The waitress brought us bread and water straight away, food arrived in good time and was delicious. Has a nice big bar to enjoy a drink inside. GooglePlace - November 2017

Where to start with this place. My fiancee and I went here to get something to eat and my review is below. Service: It didn't leave an impression on me. It wasn't anything spectacular nor was it below par. Atmosphere: It had a sea-faring theme and was pretty casual. Since we sat near the bar, we don't know if this is a family-friendly place to go. I assume since there were seats outside, that it is but I would double check to make sure. Food: Oh man, the food was really enjoyable. We just wanted a kind of quick bite and ended up getting a whole pizza between us. I must say, one of the best pizza's I've ever had. The ingredients were spot on and I could taste every flavor. Very well done. Price: Unfortunately, this is why I have to give this place a 4 star instead of 5. The food here was on the pricey side. Had some of the other elements meet or exceeded expectations, I would say it was a good trade off but this wasn't the case. For a whole pizza and dessert for two, it ended up costing $45 + tip + tax. Other than the mentioned above, not a bad place to visit. GooglePlace - June 2017
