Great diner-style cafe with super friendly staff and good food all around. I'd say their highlights are definitely their cakes. Try the triple layer chocolate + chocolate mousse + cheesecake if you can, and you won't regret it! They don't have much vegetarian options, but they were happy to accommodate us by switching side orders or customizing the plate, thank you for that! GooglePlace - December 2017

After taking in the sites of San Francisco while also doing some Christmas shopping, we were in search of a low key restaurant that served late-night meals. Someone in our group remembered Max's Opera Cafe. We were seated at a great table directly in front of the piano and able to interact with the piano player during our meal. I ordered one of the specials of the evening which was a fresh seafood dish of Ono that was prepared just right. GooglePlace - December 2017

Max's Opera Cafe is a pathetic excuse of a restaurant. We had a reservation for 5:30pm on a Saturday night in Dec 2017 and could not be sat because of a back log of reservations still waiting to be sat. Reservation 30-45 minutes before us were still waiting for a table. You cannot count on them to honor reservations so never book, but especially not if you are planning to attend the opera, theatre, ballet, or any other scheduled show afterwards. We ended up going to Home Alone at the Symphony hungry. GooglePlace - December 2017

Arrived for a dinner reservation for 10 that we had confirmed the prior day and the restaurant was pandemonium. I have never seen so many people in a reservation line WHO HAD RESERVATIONS. There were parties of 4,6, and 8 waiting for tables for reservations that were at least 1/2 hour earlier than ours. The reservation people had overbooked, were working from computer and paper lists and had a fully packed restaurant with no hope of accommodating most of the people in line. What a train wreck when you are taking small hungry children to dinner before the Nutcracker. DON'T RELY ON THEIR RESERVATIONS TO BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A WISH. GooglePlace - December 2017

I have had pastrami at delis all over America, including New York, Miami Beach, and Chicago. The pastrami I had at Max's today was the fattiest and greasiest I have ever tried to eat. I had to blot off the grease and even then I had indigestion after eating only half the sandwich. Also, the rye bread was stale. The take out plastic cartons were almost impossible to snap close. And the prices were outrageous. $25 for sandwich, lemonade, tax, and tip. Order something else. Better yet, eat somewhere else. GooglePlace - September 2017
