Original Joe’s was opened in 1937 by Croatian Immigrant Tony Rodin, who’s legendary work ethic and love for his restaurant grew Original Joe’s from a 14 stool counter to one of San Francisco’s culinary landmarks. Old fashioned Italian American cooking, with healthy portions at reasonable prices, were prepared behind the counter for all to see. Original Joe’s is the oldest of all existing “Joe’s” restaurants in the country and was an innovator of what is now nationally known as the “Joe’s” concept. Original Joe’s invented exhibition cooking, and with its leather booths and Italian American menu, featuring hamburgers, steaks, and pasta, came to signify a Northern California style of food. Original Joe’s is located at 601 Union Street, in the heart of the historic and majestic North Beach, a mecca for natives, tourists, and culinary aficionados alike. The restaurant offers exhibition cooking, eleven seat counter dining, dining room, outside seating and a full cocktail lounge. Original Joe’s also offers 3 private dining rooms that can accommodate 10 to 80 guests. Original Joe’s remains a privately held; third generation, family owned and operated enterprise based in San Francisco.

One of the best ribeyes we had during our visit. The veal was also remarkable. The staff is really friendly. I'm glad we visited here. We will definitely make this a regular stop on future visits. GooglePlace - January 2018

If you order anything, order the calamari. Their steak was really good, melted in your mouth. The eggplant parm was really good, one of the best I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Service was quick and friendly. Would recommend to come again. GooglePlace - January 2018

One of my favorite spots in San Francisco. Never had a bad meal or bad service. They are consistently good. Several different dining rooms, including a counter, hidden in the back. My favorite place to hang out is in the spacious bar, if I can get a seat by the fireplace. Great, cozy, spot for people watching, having a drink, and the full menu is served as well. Reasonable prices, good food, friendly servers. GooglePlace - January 2018

Cosy vibrant place, with a good choice of menu and drinks at a friendly price, given the scale of the portions (one main is more than enough for two) and very friendly staff. However the menu does a lot for both vegetarian and vegans. The bar and restaurant is brimming with character, but the rear private room is simply lush, including the washroom facilities too, whilst all being very accessible to all age groups and physical abilities. Highlight: Chips with Steam Beer 😻 GooglePlace - December 2017

This is a great, traditional Italian place. I've been here a few times with co-workers and friends. I love their Chicken Parmesan. It's quite filling so you can definitely make two meals out of it. I also love getting their appetizer arancini balls stuffed cheese and rice and deep fried. For breakfast, I got their donuts, which were quite tasty. Nice area, fancy place and plenty of seating. You can rent out their rooms for a party as well. GooglePlace - November 2017
